Lexile Measure Infographics

During my tenure as a teacher, I worked at schools with diverse learner populations. At these schools, students are often way below reading level, and the gaps in their reading proficiency tends to grow as they escalate through the educational system. I needed to find a way to communicate to both parents and students the importance of reading at home while also making sure that students were reading texts that would promote reading growth. Initially I had this information as a packet that I would give out to students and parents at the start of the school year as well as to new students when they would arrive, but I found that people were not reading or saving the handouts. I decided to create an infographic set that I could post to my teaching blog as well as print out poster-sized to have hanging in my classroom. Once I switched the information to a graphic, easier to read format, parent and student engagement rose noticeably. Since I have left teaching, I offer these infographics on my TPT seller page, and they have become among my most downloaded content.

Skills used:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • ADDIE
  • Graphic Design

Process:

  • As stated earlier, this project was developed after I discovered that I needed a way to increase parent understanding about how to use Lexile measures as well communicating with students how to best utilize their Lexile measure for greater learning.
  • This information was initially given as a handout within a welcome packet, but it soon became clear that parents and students were not reading and saving the information.
  • I needed to develop content that could be accessed quickly on my blog and would be easily understood.
  • I decided to use my Adobe Illustrator to create an infographic set: a how to infographic for students, a how to infographic for parents, and an infographic explaining why Lexile measures are important.
  • After publishing this content to my teaching blog as well as in poster form in my classroom, parent emails asking about how to improve reading level drastically decreased. Reading levels among all of my students greatly increased, and I began sharing this content with other English and Reading teachers within my district.
